A primitve wasp

Created by Ned 3 years ago

Mick was an encouraging and supportive boss when I worked in the Hymenoptera section of the BMNH. Myself, George Else and Mick drove his converted Rover 'van' to Greece in search of a rare primitive Scoliidae. The females were unknown. We were collecting in the ancient Olympic stadium when he let out a shriek of excitement having caught the first specimen. Tourists rushed over to see what the excitement was about........a 6mm little black wasp. Puzzled faces looked at three mad Englishmen out in the mid -day sun with 'butterfly nets' catching wasps? Many specimens were collected including females which were new to science. It was gratifying to have been part of such a successful trip. Mick wrote the paper but generously included mine and George's names as joint authors as we had made the trip together. Many happy memories of an enthusiastic and inspiring entomologist.
